FRIDAY FIVE!

30 Mar

My Friday Five series usually focuses on positive topics, ideas, and people, but sometimes something so unbelievable comes my way that I have to bring it to light.  This week’s Friday Five includes one of the most disturbing and blatant examples of weight bias (and racism) that I’ve ever seen.  Please remember:  you have a voice and can be an advocate for change.  With that, today’s Friday Five:

#1

Citizens Medical Center:  Weight Discrimination

In my inbox today was a story about Citizens Medical Center’s no-hiring policy for the obese.  Ironically enough, this was featured in Outpatient Surgery Magazine, who you may remember featured an extremely insulting “comedy” article about XXL patients (written by Dr. John Kelly, who later apologized for his lack of judgement and sensitivity in the article, although the magazine never apologized for publishing it).   I am appalled by what I read.

The CEO has instituted a no-hiring policy for the obese because, as reported in the magazine:

The majority of our patients are over 65, and they have expectations that cannot be ignored in terms of personal appearance,” David Brown, head of Citizens Medical Center in Victoria, Texas, told the Texas Tribune. “We have the ability as an employer to have a policy that says what’s best for our business and for our patients.

Mr. Brown claims overweight workers are absent from work more often than their slim colleagues, although the hospital’s decision to pass on obese applicants isn’t based on health insurance premiums. The hiring policy, notes the report, points to physical appearance and the desire to promote overall health to patients as the hospital’s basis for omitting overweight applicants from consideration.”

The Rudd Center also reports:

“Turning down qualified job applicants because of their body weight is blatant discrimination, and prevents these applicants from making meaningful contributions to their community as competent health care professionals,”  says Rebecca Puhl, PhD, Rudd Center Director of Research and Weight Stigma Initiatives. “The body weight of health professionals, like the general population, varies considerably. A health professional’s body weight is irrelevant in his or her ability to provide appropriate, sensitive, and evidence-based health care to patients.”

If you have been considering using your voice to end weight bias and discrimination, please join the cause now.  This is not an isolated incident of weight bias and discrimination – it happens all the time.   Need to start somewhere?  Consider joining the Obesity Action Coalition and go to their GET INVOLVED page to find out how you can help.

Introducing my new sponsor:  Wellesse Bariatric Liquids!

If you are a pre-op or baby post-op, you definitely should check out Wellesse Liquid Bariatric Solutions.  I am pretty selective about my sponsors, and I only showcase and feature products that I really like and stand behind.  I had never tried these (I’m four years post-op and don’t have to worry about pills, etc), so they sent me out all of the products to try and I have to tell you:  I LOVE them.  I think they taste great and are PERFECT for little pouches that need their vitamins and supplements.  I also want to buy a Snoopy Snow Cone machine just so I can make slushies with these, because I’m pretty sure they’d be AWESOME. I’ll be doing a giveaway on the radio show soon, so keep an eye on the Backstage Pass Radio Program page, and also check then out at www.wellesse.com!

I understand the appeal of all the singing and talent shows, and I think it’s given many people opportunities to perform that they may have never had otherwise.  I don’t generally watch them because I dislike the sappy segments that they totally manipulate the viewers with.  All these sensational moments that speak more about how nasty we as a society can be judging a book by it’s cover (Susan Boyle, anyone?), and it’s almost ALWAYS someone overweight.  It irks me to no end.

But this one.  Wow.  I was prepared to roll my eyes and hate it – but I couldn’t.  This is beautiful.  Not because he’s the ugly duckling that opened his mouth and sang beautifully, but because that voice caused the reaction it did.  A well-deserved reaction that I hope he continues to get through his entire life.  That voice right there is a gift,  truly:

I remember 13: “Introducing Ally”

25 Mar

Today marks the four year anniversary of my RNY Gastric Bypass Surgery.  It’s still sometimes difficult for me to wrap my brain around it:  I’ve lost 150 lbs.  I used to be 311+ lbs.  As I sit and reflect about my life today, I am proud of the decision and lifestyles changes I’ve made.  I still struggle (sometimes a lot), but surgery has made that struggle much more manageable.  I will always be thankful to Dr. Donald Hess and the Boston Medical Center Bariatric Surgery Team for changing my life on March 25, 2008.

I’m also preparing for my radio show tomorrow night, and it’s definitely making me reflect even more on my life – particularly as an obese teenager.  On the show tomorrow is Ally from www.losergurl.com and her mom, Wendy from www.theweightsover.net.  Ally is a 13 yr old cheerleader, singer, and overweight teenager who blogs about her life.  I found out about her after a friend sent me a link of her appearance on ABC’s “The Revolution,” where she discussed being overweight as a teenager.  She also posted a really moving video on YouTube about being bullied at a school dance (click on the photo below for the video):

“I wish everyone could see what I see…everyone’s BEAUTIFUL.”

This video was so incredibly touching and poignant to me, and I immediately knew I had to have this girl on my show.  I’m not sure if Ally  knows the impact that she could potentially have on other teenagers struggling right now, but I know I wasn’t even a quarter as brave, insightful, and inspirational as she is when I was her age.   Here is me at 13:

I was awkward, insecure, overweight, and at that time, did not have many  people to relate to.  I was the oldest of four and (clearly) had very little guidance on fashion or image.  I struggled to make friends and to find my own identity.  In short, it was a pretty horrific time for me.  I look at Ally – the same age as I was in this picture – and I see this beautiful, totally put together, strong girl with an incredible heart who would have been the most amazing role model for me at the time.  And I know that if the 13 yr old me could have felt inspiration from her, there are plenty of teens right now who could identify with someone as amazing as she is.  And that is why I am having her on the show.

There’s a lot being said about kids and bullying in today’s society, but not much of a big deal is made about the kids that are changing that, who are standing up for themselves and for others.  Teenagers like Ally need to be highlighted as well, because they’re doing really wonderful things in this world and making a much bigger impact than they probably even know.

And at the core of this is the parenting.  Ally clearly has an amazing mom, Wendy, who supports, encourages, and inspires with her own blog and journey.  I’m glad that she’ll be joining Ally on the show as well.  Such an amazing example of how great parenting and great family relationships can make all the difference in a young person’s life.

Please be sure to tune-in to tomorrow night’s program, “Introducing Ally.”  if you have kids or teens struggling with being overweight or obese, this is the perfect time to listen in with them, talk about things openly, and listen to a truly amazing young woman making a difference in the world.

TONIGHT! 8:00pm EST: Childhood Obesity & The Media

19 Mar

LISTEN LIVE @ 8:00 PM EST:   www.backstagepassradio.com
Live Chat opens at 7:45.  Scroll to the bottom of the page and log-in as a guest or with your BlogTalkRadio account to participate.

Tonight we’ll be discussing childhood obesity, and in particular parenting obese and overweight children and teens and how the media affects the self-esteem of our children. In the weight loss surgery community, many of us grew up with weight problems and have had the benefit in recent years to have more nutritional education available to us. Still, many of us still go back to old habits out of convenience, for financial reasons and more. We’re looking for listeners to call-in tonight and discuss their own personal histories as overweight or obese children, and what role that plays in their parenting style today.

Also on the show tonight is Dr. Carolyn Dean (www.drcarolyndean.com). Dr. Dean is a diet and childhood obesity expert who has written on the subject in her books. She is the author of “Future Health Now Encyclopedia” and “Homeopathic Remedies for Children’s Common Ailments”. Dr. Dean is a health pioneer with over 25 years of experience with stress, nutrition, diet and health issues. She’s authored 22 books including “Future Health Now Encyclopedia”, “Homeopathic Remedies for Children’s Common Ailments”, “Hormone Balance”, “365 Ways to Boost Your Brain Power: Tips, Exercise, Advice”, “The Yeast Connection”, “IBS for Dummies” and “The Magnesium Miracle”. She’s also the medical director for the Nutritional Magnesium Association: www.nutritionalmagnesium.org

FRIDAY(ish) FIVE!

17 Mar

Ok, so I’m a day late on a series that I only started last week.  I’m nothing if not consistent!  ;)

Here are the five cool things/people/events that I think you should now about this week:

#1:

Diamond Dallas Page – DDP Yoga!

You may remember DDP from when he was on the Backstage Pass Radio Program last year. DDP was Carnie Wilson’s personal trainer on the TV show, “Unstapled.”  Many of you also know Dallas as a professional wrestler. He became a pro wrestler at 35, and his career didn’t take off until he was 39.  At 40, he was one of the top wrestlers in the word and at 42, he suffered a potentially career-ending injury.  It was suggested to him to try yoga, and his initial instinct was that it was mumbo jumbo, but he was desperate to save his body that he gave it a shot. He then teamed up with nutritionists,  kinesiologists and created a workout where he took the basic principles of yoga blended with elements of strength conditioning, pilates, and mixed martial arts and created DDP Yoga.  And at 43, DDP won the World Wrestling Heavyweight Championship title, an honor and title he went on to hold three additional times.  His website is www.ddpyoga.com.  Check out this kick-ass new DDP Yoga!

#2

HER POETRY

My friend Josie has such a lovely Facebook Page, and I’m always enthralled with the poetry, photos, and inspiration she posts on her wall.   In fact, her “about” page says:  Admires anyone brave enough to write poetry as well as those that show authentic expression through their music or art.  Often found musing about the internet attempting to capture moments of magic.

I think she’s a sweetheart with a really great eye (and pen) for all things artistic.  Please say hello to her on Facebook, add her as a friend, and tell her Diva Taunia sent you!

#3

UNDER ATOMS

My friend Heather and her kick-ass band Under Atoms have won the first round qualifier for the Boston Hard Rock Rising Contest!   Heather kicks much ass onstage, and she’s the kindest, most loveable person off-stage.  The band is really solid and strong, and I knew as soon as I had heard them that they would be the winners.  :)  From the website:

Once upon a long time ago in a galaxy somewhere in New England, Under Atoms (the band formerly known as UNDER ADAMS) saw its meager beginnings in a simple bass player’s basement. Times were tough, the beer was warm, but we’ve held it together for many years.

Several years and a relocation of basements later, Under Atoms, now thrives somewhere near the shores of Salisbury, admiring the albatross and making beautiful music together. We have seen the other side of the tunnel and want to buy some real estate there so that our dedicated following can stop by and party with us until the penguins come home.

Along the way, Under Atoms has been grateful to have been able to play at a few different places like the House of Blues and the Hard Rock Cafe–both in Boston–as well as The Grog up in Newburyport.  Visit the Hard Rock Rising Page Here!

#4

Weight Loss Surgery Foundation of America

As some of you may know, I am on the Board of Directors for the Weight Loss Surgery Foundation of America, and I couldn’t be prouder of that.  I’m really excited to be attending the upcoming Meet & Greet in Las Vegas, NV, and I hope you’ll be there too!

There will be a ton of great vendors, speakers, and pre-op and post-op people there, and it’s a great way to connect with others in your community and learn about some seriously awesome bariatric products (and walk away with some serious loot!  Samples GALORE!)

Be sure to check out the website at www.wlsfa.org, and hope to see you on May 18-20th at Ballys’ on the strip!

Today is St. Patrick’s Day!

Despite being a very pale Irish lass, I do not like or drink beer, so the best I can do is give this patron saint a shout out on my blog.  Check out stpattys.com to learn about the history of St. Patrick’s Day, see some pictures, and find some cool irish stuff to buy.

May you live a long life full of gladness and health, with a pocket full of gold,as the least of your wealth. May the dreams you hold dearest, be those which come true, the kindness you spread, keep returning to you. ~Irish Blessing

VSGMOM.COM – CORSETS GALORE!

10 Mar

Recently, the lovely Michelle over at vsgmom.com wrote a post enlisting my help on how to wear a corset.  What’s been really interesting to me is how many requests and questions I’ve gotten about this exact topic, and I love that I’ve sort of unofficially become the corset guru.  :)  It’s been through a lot of trial and error that I’ve figured out “how” to wear corsets and lingerie, but running a burlesque show will do that for a girl:  ”smoosh in all excess skin – pronto.”   I’m flattered to have been asked, so here goes:

About me and my extra baggage:  my “excess” is all in my midsection.  I’ve been very fortunate to not have to deal with anything on my arms and legs, but creating a waist line when the skin from your former 311+ lbs self is all in the middle, it’s tough.  It is admittedly difficult to feel sexy when you’ve got to come up with creative ways to smoosh that in and create a waistline that you don’t actually have.  In my every day life, I rely on Slimpressions daily.  Much like Michelle admits in her post, I’m name-dropping here, but for good reason.  Slimpressions products kick-ass, and they have two 2011 WLS Awards to prove it (nominated by and voted on by the weight loss surgery community).  And the great thing is, they can also help you in the corset department too.  (More on that in a moment or two.)   Want some Slimpressions of your own?  Use coupon code DIVAVSG  and you’ll get 25% off your entire purchase!
The first rule of wearing a corset:  size UP.  I generally wear a size L in my tops.  For corsets, I wear (depending on the actual garment) a size 1x or 2x.  This may not be the same for women who don’t have excess skin in the midsection, but almost every website will tell you to size up.  At Fredericks, I wear a size 40, although my bra size is a 36.  Corsets are built smaller because they suck you in, and it’s all done through the corset lacing in the back. The second rule is “cinching.”  Cinching refers to the amount of shaping control around the waist that a garment has.  All corsets are different, though – it depends on the type.  Here’s a quick cheat sheet:
Zipper Front:  if a corset has a zipper front, it is much closer to your normal top size, and there won’t be a ton of cinching going on. These types of corsets are great for “going out,” as you can wear them as a top.  They’re more comfortable than a traditional corset, and you give up some of the cinching in exchange for comfort. The other great thing about a zipper-front corset is that you don’t need an extra pair of hands to get into it, you can put it on yourself and rock it.   Click HERE for an example of a zipper front corset.
Waist Cincher or Underbust Corset:  Waist cinchers can be shapers worn under the clothing, or they can be elaborate underbust corsets.  Generally with a shaper, it’s a wide piece of compression fabrice that’s worn directly around your waist and is much more like a shaping garment.  An underbust corset is more structured, with boning and more of a costume or lingerie feel.  These are great because you can pair them with your favorite bra or wear them over a blouse.  Both generally have hook-eye closures in the front.  Here is an example of a compression waist cincher and here is an example of an underbust cincher.
Bustier:  a bustier is a corset with straps and looks more like a top.  The fabric tends to be less-cinching, but the “look” of it is more corset. If the bustier comes with back lacing, it will most likely provide more cinching that a normal bustier.  Here is an example of a bustier that’s less restricting, and here’s one that provides a moderate amount of restriction and cinching.
Corset:  Corsets come in underbust and overbust.  Overbust covers both the waist and the chest area, while underbust works more like a waist cincher.  They general come with lacing in the back and some form of hook-eye closure in the front.  The lacing is the back needs to be loosed before you get into the garment, and then laced tightly once you’re in it.  Corsets look fantastic, but generally require a second pair of hands to lace you up in the back.  Modern-day corsets usually provide a really beautiful design and a moderate amount of cinching.  There are also bondage-specific corsets, which tend to be used for uh, other things, and those are particularly restricting.  Most corset websites provide modern-day corsets that do both:  look pretty and provide some cinching.  Here is an example of my favorite type of corset. It’s super-cute, provides a moderate amount of cinching, and can be worn as lingerie OR a really cute top. If a corset contains “boning,” you’ll most likely be getting some cinching with it.  Corsets can also come in different lengths.  For me, I have a long torso, so long-line corsets are great for more coverage.
Some other key words:
Stretch/lace/mesh:  will provide less cinching and restriction, more comfort, and pretty design.
Steel/boning/lacing:  will provide more cinching and restriction, but also offer pretty design.
Are they comfortable?
Most modern-day corsets are fairly comfortable.  Standing up, lying down – feels totally normal.  Any time there’s a “bend” in the waist (sitting), you’ll feel a bit more restricted by the boning in the corset.
Will my extra skin smoosh out over the top?
Usually, if you have the right size, NO.  For example, I went to Frederick’s to get a corset for the show, and tried on a size 40.  It provided a fair amount of the cinching I wanted in the waist, and fit perfectly everywhere else.  The salesperson talked me into trying on the 38.  It made my waist TINY, but I was overflowing on the top – both around my bust area, and my back area, and it wasn’t pretty.  In addition, I could barely breathe.  I switched back to the 40 and gave up extra cinching restriction in favor of comfort.  Here is the corset I ended up with, and it shows the amount of restriction that was provided.  I have a bit of a waist here, which is a pretty big deal since that area is directly where all my excess skin is.  The corset was comfortable and looked cute.  (Note:  yes, I know that this is a ridiculous costume.  lol)
Are there tricks to wearing corsets?
For me, I have few go-to options that always make me feel more comfortable. Here are a few examples:
Slimpressions “Have Nots” :  these are great for providing some extra compression and control UNDER the corset, and also keep all the batwing stuff at bay.  This is a great option particularly if you’re planning on wearing the corset as more of a top with jeans or a skirt.
Nude Bodysuit or Bodystocking:   I generally wear these (color is “nude”)  underneath my corsets for extra shape and control, but with a bit of invisibility.  If you have batwings or are at all self-conscious about your arms, this is a great option.  If you’re looking for some extra sexy with it, you can always get a fishnet bodystocking.
Where do you get your corsets?
One of my favorite corset and lingerie shops is Divas and Goddesses.  Becky Norwood (the owner) is really great about providing options in ALL shapes and sizes and she has a killer collection of gorgeous corsets, bustiers, and lingerie.  She offers a 10% discount using coupon code DIVAT and has three sites you can shop at  (and these are all woman-owned and operated small business websites, so support hard-working ladies who embrace beauty and sex appeal in ALL sizes):
Want to accessorize and bat your eyelashes?  Shop at my new favorite false eyelash story and use coupon code DIVAT to get 15% off (expires 3/12):   www.de-beauty.com
And last, but definitely not least, you can accessories your corsets with some great shapewear from SLIMPRESSIONS :  www.slimpressions.com.  Get 25% off using coupon code DIVAT.
Hope this helps.  Now go on and get your sexy on!  :)

I met Liz Bills last year when she signed on to be part of the cast of The Diva Taunia Dolls.  This gal is incredibly talented – sings, plays guitar, plays piano, writes her own stuff, and just a real sweetheart to boot.

A friend of mine stumbled upon her cover of  Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To  Know,” and I have been obsessing over her version all week long.  I just really, really dig this and her singing on it is pretty kick ass.  CLICK HERE to listen to the music video and visit her website at www.lizbills.com and her band’s Facebook Page, Analog Heart.

Is there someone/something you think I should feature on next week’s Friday Five?  Email me at info@divataunia.com and let me know!
