Valentine’s Love : Reviews & Sponsors!

14 Feb

Happy Valentine’s Day!  Since I am home sick and single, I thought I’d show some love to some of my favorite new sponsors and companies.  Remember:  my policy is that I only review products I love.  There’s tons that don’t make it here on the blog, but the ones that do?  You can be sure that I say what I mean:  I  ♥  them.

Mally Beauty:

This fabulous new line was created by makeup artist to the stars: Mally Roncal.  Mally is a favorite among a versatile group of music industry heavyweights and actors including; Beyonce (!), Jennifer Lopez, Mary J. Blige, Hayden Panettiere, Rihanna, Teri Hatcher, Celine Dion, Lee Ann Womack, and Ashlee Simpson.  She created a new line of products that I’ve absolutely fallen in love with.

The packaging is gorgeous, and the products feel like silk.  I swear, I’m not even exaggerating – they really do!  I tired the Perfect Prep Poreless Primer,  (pictured)  the Ultimate Performance Liquid Foundation, and the Liquid Face Defender.  All three products were the lightest, silkiest products I’ve ever put on my face.  I’m particularly in love with the Perfect Prep Poreless Primer, because it does a fantastic job of making my foundation last and I have full coverage for the entire night.  As someone who is onstage a lot under lights, getting hot and sometimes sweaty, it’s important for my makeup to stay put.  This primer does a great job with that, and feels pretty fantastic on my skin to boot.

Mally Beauty has a whole line of makeup products that I’d love to try as well with products for face, lips, eyes, body, and fragrance.  If these three products that I tried are any indication for the rest, this line wins 5 stars ub my Diva Glam! review:  I love them!

Eve Pearl Makeup:  www.evepearl.com
Review By:  Manda @ Mandamonium.net

Manda is my favorite makeup artist, and she manages hair and makeup for all the Diva Taunia Dolls Burlesque shows!  She reviews products for me as well, and she LOVED the Eve Pearl product line.  Here’s what she had to say:

“Let me start by saying I have been wrong only a handful of times in my life and one of those times was when I passed up buying the salmon

HD Foundation Trio A

concealer from Eve Pearl at a makeup show in NYC on year.  My fellow makeup artist friends were raving about how amazing the product is and how I just had to have it in my kit. I had purchased a pallet of concealers at a previous booth for a few hundred bucks so I passed in lieu of saving a few bucks:  big mistake!

Fast forward a few years later and I’m doing reviews for Diva Taunia’s Backstage Pass and I open up a box of goodies from Eve Pearl. Concealer Trio A which has two fair shades and the salmon shade (pictured) and a Blush Trio Spicy Cheeks Tan.  Oh. My. Goodness. I’m so in love.

I think to myself when I open up the concealer container, how good could this actually be, really? Oooooh, THAT good! Let’s start with the amazing texture, it’s oil free and feels so velvety and smooth. The blend-ability is so important and this may be one of the best I’ve ever used. You can put it on super sheer or build it to a full coverage without it looking like spackle on your face, I’ve used this on a few models with no foundation and it was beautiful. Next, longevity, I work very long days on set, and it LASTS ALL DAY. Colors are lifelike and none of that artificial coloring that matches no human being’s skin. I’m kicking myself in the behind for waiting so long to give this product a shot. I won’t be living without it anytime soon!

The blush trio is also so beautiful, the shades, though for med-tan skin tones work beautifully on my pasty white self as well, just need to use a little lighter touch. It comes with two blushes, one pink and one peach shade and a shimmery bronzer.  Great for day to night wear. This didn’t even make it into my artist kit, it went right into my personal makeup bag! I can’t wait to get my hands on some more of the Eve Pearl line.  Huge score for this Diva Glam review!

Diva Taunia Dolls Burlesque Sponsor Love:

This is the section where we give HUGE shout-out love to the costuming sponsors of our Fierce, Foxy, & Fabulous at 40! show, happening this Sunday, February 19th at The Junkyard in Nashua, NH.  These very generous sponsors have supplied us with some seriously sexy costuming, and we would love for you to help us show them some reciprocal love and visit their websites!

Divas & Goddesses

Becky has been a long-time supporter of both The Diva Taunia Dolls AND The Backstage Pass Radio Program.  My guess is that today, on Valentine’s Day, many of my listeners who have won prizes from her are walking around in a sexy little number supplied by her!  She’s got a fantastic selection of corsets, lingerie, shoes, swimwear in more and she celebrates the beauty and sex appeal of women of ALL shapes and sizes.  She’s got something for EVERYONE on her site, and that’s why I love her so much!

Check out this hot bustier/corset over here on the left.  This is being featured in our show along with a gorgeous bustle skirt that she sent me, and various other lingerie and stockings she’s provided us.  her products are really high-quality, and just absolutely gorgeous.  So go on and show Becky and Divas & Goddesses some love and get yourself all burlesque-d up too!  ♥

Kumillion Lingerie:

Kuhmillion.com

This is our first time working with Kumillion Lingerie, but Beth jumped right on board with her support – literally!  She sent us some really great booty shorts, along with some fabulous fishnet stockings and a gorgeous bustle skirt (pictured) that will be making an appearance onstage too.  Kuhmillion also offers a great plus size section, and I love, love, love their whole burlesque vibe.  Great prices, great selection, and really, really nice people.   Stop over and tell them Diva Taunia sent you!  xo

Here’s a sad little story with a very happy ending:  I recently went to curl my lashes, and ended up ripping about half of them out on my right eye (don’t ask – too much mascara in play).  So how happy was I when I opened this fantastic sponsor package to see bunches and bunches of false eyelashes in front of me??

De-Beauty saved the day, and all of the girls (including me!) are going to have sassy, long, gorgeous lashes for our show on Sunday!   They have a really amazing selection of lashes from Natural to Festive to crazy Glow In the Dark styles!  REALLY reasonably priced and easy to put on.  If you’ve never used false lashes before, now’s the time to try them out:  they make a HUGE difference when you really want a “wow!” affect.  Try some out now!

CorsetChick.com

Corset Chick:
Almost all of my solo performances are being costumed by Corset Chick!   Robert was really great and supplied me with one of my favorite new corsets - the little polka dot number pictured here.  The fit is fantastic, and the quality is really top-knotch.  Some of the best fitting corsets that I’ve come across, and Corset Chick is definitely one of my absolute favorite new sponsors.  You’ll see me prancing around in this little red number, along with this black vinyl (!) corset, which is quite frankly, going to be my favorite part of the show.  Prancing around in a black vinyl corset on my 40th birthday?  Hells yeah, that’s a good birthday!  lol   Please show them some love and stop by their site for some high-quality, great fitting new corsets!

Baci-Farfalle:
Baci-Farfalle is a long-time supporter of The Diva Taunia Dolls, and they’ve supplied us with some of our more elaborate corset costuming for each of our shows!  Often times these are the “exclusive” corsets that I wear onstage.  What I love most about them is that in addition to their HUGE selection of corsets, they have sizes ranging to 7x-9x in some styles.  Like all of the companies above, they truly celebrate diversity in women, and that’s a company I want to get behind and support.  Their customer service is top-knotch too!  I love, love, love this site and all they have to offer.

Friday 10/21: NH CHRONICLE *TV* FEATURE!

15 Oct
Friday October 21st: Getting Inspired with Diva Taunia – New Hampshire Chronicle News Story – WMUR New Hampshire
Hah…I want to “inspire you.” It’s always funny to me the titles and catch phrases that end up being the storylines for this type of press. (PS – I don’t pick those, they do. Otherwise it would read, “Diva Taunia wants to kick her own ass and lose these pesky extra pounds!” lol :)

EXCITING NEWS!

7 Sep

Exciting news!  Tonight, I’ll be filmed with my gals in The Diva Taunia Dolls as part of a feature for the television program, NH Chronicle!  I’ve been a long-time fan of the show, and I’m super excited that the gorgeous Tiffany Eddy will be interviewing us. (And yes, I’m going to try like heck to talk her into learning a number and throwing on a costume! lol)

I’ll be talking about The Diva Taunia Project, and my attempt to lose 20 lbs (!) by my 40th birthday on February 18th, which has now become our next Diva Taunia Dolls show:
“40, Fierce & Fabulous:  The 40th Birthday Bash!”

So exciting, and I’m trying not to let my nerves get the best of me.  I’ll keep you posted about when the show airs!  Fingers crossed that I don’t trip over myself dancing tonight.  :)

A GLIMPSE INTO MY 7 YR OLD BRAIN

21 Aug
A few years back, my mother made my siblings and I a photo scrapbook of our entire childhood lives. While I’m generally far too lazy to scrap book anything for myself, I really love that my mom took the time to make these for all of us. There are tons of photos, but also event-specific items from our lives. For me, she kept the award ceremonies book from the Boston Globe when I won for a painting of mine at 14 (sounds impressive, but 14 was the culmination of my painting talents, nothing followed), my report cards, and this gem – which was my very first published article/letter:

This was published in the Wilmington Town Crier on May 28th, 1980.  I was 7 years old in the second grade.  My teacher was Mrs. Maxey, who I completely adored, especially since she submitted my article to the paper.  As you can see from the photo, there was a fire in my school, and we were all shuffled over to the church (!) for school.  It was noisy, cramped, hot, and pretty unbearable for a whole school of young kids.  It’s kind of funny how much I recall from that period of time considering I can’t remember what I did five minutes ago.

Taking a trip down memory lane, let’s dissect this article, shall we?  A little window into my 7 yr old head:

1)  Dear Sir (?):   I was clearly experimenting with punctuation.  Or maybe I had a quick flash-forward to my life full of drag queens.  Either way, I think the question mark is a lovely way to open a pressing and important article.

2)  Stars:   Even at 7, I understood the importance of visually grabbing my audience.  Stars=important!  Read this article, dammit!

3)  Date:   Look, I don’t have time for date accuracy, my school was on fire.

4)  Spacing:   Being smooshed in a little church room cramped my style.  Jesus would want me to not waste space.  Letmemakesureitallfitsandjustkeepwritingtogetmypointacrosss.

5)  Vandalism:   My grammar may have sucked, but hot damn if my spelling wasn’t kick-ass!

6)  Punctation:   STOPTHIS.  Gigantic periods.  Just so there were no questions about whether I was done with my thoughts and statements. Remember, Jesus didn’t want me to waste space, so I made the most of what I had.

7)  No littering:   Clearly this caught on.  I see these signs everywhere now.  Why am I not getting credit!?

8)  Most of all, no fires:   This was important because  Smokey the Bear was constantly telling me  that only *I* could prevent forest (and school) fires.  I took my responsibility VERY seriously!

9)  Too squeese:   The cramped, hot workspace in which I was penning my impressive first article was wearing on me.  I had already mastered the art of being very dramatic.

10)  I hope you can help:   Because I’m like, seven, and the stress of preventing fires is wearing on me.  Please see discussion point number 9.

11)  Very truly yours:   I’m pretty sure I was the most formal 7 yr old on the block. VERY truly yours!

When I’m old and delirious, these are the types of things that I’m fairly certain I will be able to recall with great accuracy, thanks to my mom and her scrap book.  :)

I CAN DO *ANYTHING* !!

2 Aug
If you’re reading this blog, you’re most likely already familiar with me and my weight-loss journey.  If not, here’s a little background for you::
  • I weighed 311 + lbs for most of my adult life
  • I had RNY Gastric Bypass Surgery on 3/25/08 and have successfully maintained a 150+ lbs loss for over 3.5 years.
  • I’m afraid of EVERYTHING.  Seriously.  Anxiety-ridden.  All. The. Time.  My big fears:
    • heights
    • flying
    • being alone in unfamiliar situations
    • traveling
    • being alone and getting male attention (history of abuse as a child)
I mention these things because I know that I’m not the only one who suffers from anxiety disorders and/or panic attacks.  In fact, anxiety is really common in post-wls patients.  Just take a quick poll of some of your friends in the wls community, and I’d be willing to bet you could come up with a handful of friends who suffer.
For a long while, I took both Prozac and Buspirone to manage my anxiety symptoms and attacks.  While I did feel like they helped me manage panic on a day to day basis, I also noticed a HUGE weight gain of almost 20 lbs immediately.  I hated that.  After spending three years losing weight, I wasn’t thrilled to see 20 lbs settle so quickly and stubbornly.  I spoke with people about stopping the meds and was met with a lot of resistance from both medical professionals and friends.  So?  I stopped them – cold turkey.  I told no one.  (Important to note:  I am not a medical professional – in any way, shape or form.  If you take what I’m saying as medical advice, you truly DO need your head checked.  CHECK WITH YOUR MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS.)
In about two weeks time, I lost 10 lbs instantly.  I honestly felt no differently than before, save for the weight loss. I finally fessed up to my therapist, and while I expected her to chastise me, she did the exact opposite.  She asked me how long I had been off them – I said over two weeks.  She then told me about Harvard Medical Center Research Studies that showed 60% of SSI users received a “placebo affect,” meaning – taking the pill made them feel better, even though the pill didn’t change anything chemically for them.  I decided to continue to not take them.  (Again:  don’t be a dope!  Check with your doctor, yo!)
After only a few weeks of being off these medications, I was on a plane with my best friend to the Dominican Republic.  In fact, up until the past year or so – I rarely ever traveled at all.   If you’ve seen me at a WLS event, you’ve witnessed a bit of a small miracle for me.  BUT, ever time I do it, I feel stronger.  I feel braver.
When Suzanne first asked me to go on our recent trip, she was shocked when I gave her an instant yes.  Suzanne is VERY adventurous.  She’s been all over the world by herself trying new things and completely fearless.   Me?  I go nowhere.  I hardly try anything new because it induces panic. Truth be told:  I still cannot fly without Ativan.  I just. CAN’T.  I still deal with panic attacks, and they can be horrific, especially up in the air, but I still sort of shake my head in disbelief at the things that I can do now, and I made a promise to continue to try new things.
So fast-forward now to the Dominican Republic.  I said yes, and I was on a flight to the Caribbean, headed to Sosua and Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic.  And let me tell you what I did while I was there:
EVERYTHING.  I lived my life like I have never have before.  I am so proud of myself for pushing myself beyond my normal comfort level and really enjoying everything I did.  I look back on everything, and still can’t believe I did these things:
  • I took a scuba course (didn’t get doc approval note, so couldn’t go on a dive -boo!)
  • I went snorkeling!  I saw gorgeous coral and fish!
  • I went surfing, and I was GOOD! (Despite a sprained ankle – my surfing injury)
  • I walked around town BY MYSELF.
  • I laid out by the pool, got lunch and other meals BY MYSELF.
  • I went on a motor conch ride to the beach (with Suzanne on another conch).
  • I spoke Spanish!  I spoke with everyone I came across, and Spanish just came back to me. I was speaking with people in another language, in another country, and I wasn’t SCARED.  In fact, I even translated most conversations between me, Suzanne and the regular townspeople.
  • I walked around in just my bathing suit – a specific highlight for me because of recent weight gains and my personal self-confidence issues about that.
  • I talked with people about weight loss surgery (VERY foreign there).
  • I negotiated prices with people, rather than being taken advantage of!
  • I went to the beaches, lied out in the sun, swam, made friends.
  • I went out the the bars and clubs (although always flashing my wedding ring).
  • I went for rides through the countryside.
  • I never touched my hair dryer, and barely wore makeup.  These things have always been my “safety-net” or “armor.”  My love of fashion and makeup is well-known, but I was proud of myself for not hiding behind those things – just being me.
  • I sang for people.
  • I lived. I LIVED.
When I think back to almost four years ago, I can’t help but be sad at who I was.  I was a big-mouthed, ballsy blond, but I was also very sad.  I hardly went anywhere and didn’t believe I could do anything – mostly because of my weight.  And truthfully?  I couldn’t.  My weight kept me from trying new things, from doing physical things, and in a way, it was a prison.  Granted, I’m not a lightweight now, but I can move my body.  I CAN do things that require strength and agility.  I CAN move my body. I SURFED.  I mean, holy shitballs, I got myself up on a surfboard!  I still can’t believe I did that.  And I want to do it MORE.

I think the most important thing that I took away from this trip is that I *can* be active, and physical, and sporty.  I mean, I’m almost 40, and this was the first time in my life that I ever REALLY lived.  I can’t wait to go on my next trip.   I’m going to push this body and my mind to keep living, keep trying new things, keep being thankful for the life that I have now.
I cannot thank my friend Suzanne enough for taking me along her latest adventure.  The Dominican Republic was where I really found out what I am made of, and I have her to thank for bringing me along for the trip.
I believe we can do almost anything we set our minds to do – it’s all a matter of how much you believe in yourself (save for physical conditions that make some things impossible).  Please post in the comment section of this blog entry:  what will YOU do?  You can do ANYTHING. Tell me!

Thanks for being with me for the journey!  xoxo

=================

Open auditions for The Diva Taunia Dolls Burlesque! We are the Lowell areas largest production – with a cast and crew of 50+ people. While we promote ourselves as burlesque and there’s plenty of opportunity for solo burlesque numbers, our strength is our full-scale song and dance productions: singing, dancing, costuming, comedy, drama, and more!

We pride ourselves on including anyone and everyone who wants a place in the show- whether it’s behind the scenes, helping out the night of the performances, as a soloist, or as a cast member (singing, dancing). Everyone performs at their own comfort level – and we have a wide range of “types” of performances – from fully costumed to down to the tassles. Everyone involved decides their level of comfort and has a choice in the numbers they perform. We do have a “seniority” performing order, although exceptions are often made. (All performance and solo decisions are made by Diva Taunia, The Executive Artistic Director & Choreographer.) We have a really friendly group, and we celebrate diversity! All are welcome: women, men, drag queens, anyone who wants to be part of the show is considered!

We do two large-scale productions a year, our next being for Halloween at Gemstones Nightclub on Saturday, 10/22 at 9pm. The theme is obviously Halloween, but we’re also vamping it up with gothic, dark, and intense performances this time around. (Our theme changes for each performance). Throughout the year we will do smaller performances – guest appearances at other shows, festivals, etc. The level of commitment depends on how many numbers you perform in. We typically rehearse on Sundays at the venue and on Wednesday nights in North Chelmsford, MA. Much of our learning and practicing is done via video tutorials that are kept private, but up online for cast members to be able to practice at home.

Important to Note: this is a *volunteer* opportunity. All ticket proceeds go directly towards maintaining the group and giving performances large-scale opportunities to strut their stuff. Our group is about empowering women (and men!) to be self-confident, sexy, and secure in a supportive, dynamic, and super-fun environment. We think of it like a community theatre production – performers are in it for the experience. :)

AUDITIONS – CAST & CREW:

CREW: While you do not have to “audition” in the typical sense of the word, we would like to meet you in person so that we can mutually decide on a good fit within the crew.

SINGERS AND DANCERS: Singers should come prepared to sing a song that shows off their voice. Please have a full song prepared, although we may stop you after a verse and chorus in the interest of time. Please bring a backup track with you (instrumental versions only – no leads should be on the track). You will also be asked to perform the song described in the next section.
