Featured in Cover 2 Cover Magazine!
I just happened upon this lovely feature in Cover 2 Cover Magazine. Of course, I’m so VERY shy prancing around in my fishnet stalkings. lol Huge thanks to Kristen Schueler Photography for a picture that I’m sure to be happy about 30 years from now. lol
Thanks to Cover 2 Cover for the feature!
I don’t suck nearly as bad as I thought!
I’m only $80 away from my fundraising goal! This is pretty amazing considering I really *am* the world’s WORST fundraiser. I’m going to give it one more go after this with a video on my YouTube channel (“Hi! It’s me! Begging for money from you!”, but I’m hoping that I may actually excede my goal. That would take me right out of “suckage” to “not too shabby.” Plus, my charity would be rockin’ with a few extra donated bucks.
If you or anyone you know has been affected by obesity, please consider making a tax-deductable donation that will raise funds and draw attention to obesity and the need for treatment and prevention efforts, as well as sensitivity training.
Many thanks! xo

VIDEO: Weight Bias in Health Care (Bravo!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=lZLzHFgE0AQ#!
Yale’s Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity has just released a REALLY powerful video exposing the bias and prejudices that are experienced by overweight
What I love most about this video is that rather than just address that bias and discrimination exists, they expose the
how their preventative care is compromised by being affected by bias within the medical community. Even better, the Rudd Center provides a very simple list of ways that medical practices and professionals can help provide a more comfortable and welcoming environment for overweight patients in addition to questioning their own assumptions and personal attitudes towards overweight patients.
“The medical community offers great opportunity to help address the issue of weight bias because with positive attitudes, people will get better care, not only that but it will be modeling for the world about how overweight people should be treated and what weight *is*.”
From the Rudd Center For Food Policy & Obesity:
Overweight and obese patients frequently feel stigmatized in health care settings, and face stereotypes and prejudice from health care providers.
These stigmatizing experiences (also called ‘weight bias’) jeopardize patients’ emotional and physical health. The Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University (www.yaleruddcenter.org) has released this new video in response to a growing concern about weight bias in health care. The video, hosted by celebrity and activist Emme and featuring Rudd Center experts including Dr. Rebecca Puhl and Dr. Kelly Brownell, uses expert commentary and dramatic representation to increase awareness of bias and stigma that overweight and obese patients encounter in health care. Equally importantly, the video presents a range of practical strategies to help providers reduce bias in their clinical practice, and to optimize the health care experience for their overweight and obese patients.

TONIGHT! 8:00pm EST: Childhood Obesity & The Media
Tonight we’ll be discussing childhood obesity, and in particular parenting obese and overweight children and teens and how the media affects the self-esteem of our children. In the weight loss surgery community, many of us grew up with weight problems and have had the benefit in recent years to have more nutritional education available to us. Still, many of us still go back to old habits out of convenience, for financial reasons and more. We’re looking for listeners to call-in tonight and discuss their own personal histories as overweight or obese children, and what role that plays in their parenting style today.
Also on the show tonight is Dr. Carolyn Dean. Dr. Dean is a diet and childhood obesity expert who has written on the subject in her books. She is the author of “Future Health Now Encyclopedia” and “Homeopathic Remedies for Children’s Common Ailments”. Dr. Dean is a health pioneer with over 25 years of experience with stress, nutrition, diet and health issues. She’s authored 22 books including “Future Health Now Encyclopedia”, “Homeopathic Remedies for Children’s Common Ailments”, “Hormone Balance”, “365 Ways to Boost Your Brain Power: Tips, Exercise, Advice”, “The Yeast Connection”, “IBS for Dummies” and “The Magnesium Miracle”. She’s also the medical director for the Nutritional Magnesium Association: Tonight we’ll be discussing childhood obesity, and in particular parenting obese and overweight children and teens. In the weight loss surgery community, many of us grew up with weight problems and have had the benefit in recent years to have more nutritional education available to us. Still, many of us still go back to old habits out of convenience, for financial reasons and more. I’d be very curious to hear from parents who suffered from weight issues themselves, and how that is reflected on their parenting style now. Do you teach your children about healthy foods and being active? Would love to hear from you – please call in to our show at 347-857-2052.
We’ll also be discussing some of the recent failed media campaigns addressing childhood obesity. Your opinions and thoughts on the Georgia Childhood Obesity Campaigns and the recently closed “Habit Heroes” exhibit from Disney will be up for discussion. The links for those campaigns can be found on my blog at www.divatauniablog.com if you’d like to check those out before we open discussion.
