Lingo / Language

Like many online communities, the weight loss surgery communities often uses abbreviations, terms, slang, and lingo that might not make sense to you right away. Here is a list of terms that you might find helpful, with links for more information.

WLS:  weight loss surgery

ASMBS:  American Society for Metobolic and Bariatric Surgery

B2B:  Back to Basics

BBGCBariatric Bad Girls Club

BMI:  Body Mass Index

BMR: Basal Metabolic Rate

BOB:  band-over-bypass (the procedure that Carnie Wilson recently had)

BTV:  Batriatric TV.com
Important to note:  just found out Bariatric TV’s Forum had a pretty extensive list going in 2009 and 2010 – way before it even became a thought in my head.  Those freaks start ALL the fun around here!  ;)  Check out the thread HERE.

DS: duodenal switch

DUMPING SYNDROMEa condition where ingested foods bypass the stomach too rapidly and enter the small intestine largely undigested

FF:  fat free

Freak :  surgically altered freak/ wls post op (mainly over at BTV!)

GERD: gastro-esophageal reflux disease

OAC: Obesity Action Coalition

OH: Obesity Help

LOSER’S BENCH:  A metaphor for where all post-ops go and sit together after surgery.

LC:  low carb

M&G:  Meet & Greet

MINI GB: mini gastric bypass

MO:  morbid obesity

NEWBIE:  person new to the community

NON-SCALE VICTORY: a way to measure success without using the scale

NSAIDS:  non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

NSV: non-scale victory

NUT:  nutritionist

ONEDERLAND:  leaving the “200′s” or when you reach a weight of 199 lbs or below

PCP:  primary care physican

PRE-OP:  patient before surgery

PMA:  positive mental attitude

POST-OP:  patient after surgery

POUCH:  the stomach after surgery

PB: productive burping

RTD:  ready to drink

RNY: roux-en-y (gastric bypass surgery)

SF: sugar free

SLEEVE:  stomach after vertical sleeve gastrectomy

VSG: Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy

WLS Class:  the year you had your surgery

WLSFA: Weight Loss Surgery Foundation of America

YMMV:  your mileage may vary

    Sleeve – stomach after surgery for VSG
    NUT – Nutritionist (because lots of them are NUTS!)
    Foamies – when you eat too much and your stomach fills up with saliva which then foams all over like a rabid dog. :)

    Thought of another few …. “Pyloric valve” lost during RNY – Replaced with a Stoma – Loss may cause dumping syndrome …. And “dumping syndrome” – and “stoma” – “Stricture”

    RTD- ready to drink, referring to premixed protien drinks
    YMMV- your mileage may vary, not necessarily wls lingo but used frequently

    I had RNY, but for those who have had the band, the term “PB” kept being dropped. I finally found out it means “Productive Burping.”
